Effective communication, be it verbal or not, is conveying and receiving information clearly. It is an essential part of my personal and professional life.
Effective communication is vital in the work place, where teamwork is important. The ability to communicate a vision and direction, as well as to motivate and inspire others in the team, is part of effective communication. Also, putting across important decisions and ideas to fellow co-workers unambiguously can only be done with effective communication. Ineffective communication often leads to wasted time and effort, confusion and missed opportunities, all of which are roadblocks to success. A recent survey, conducted by the University of Pittsburgh’s Katz Business School, found out that communication skills, including written and oral presentations, as well as the ability to work with others, are the main factor contributing to career success. Hence, being able to communicate well will give me an edge in the working world, whatever my profession may be.
Communication involves expressing our thoughts, ideas, and feelings to others; it is what we say and how we say it. Through this process, we convey attitudes, values, priorities, and beliefs. Particularly in the personal context, ineffective communication often leads to hurt feelings of loved ones. A parent who fails to convey enough love to his/her child may leave the child feeling alone and abandoned. In an inappropriate tone, words spoken to console may aggravate the situation. Thus, effective communication is, no doubt, vital for maintaining healthy and strong relationships.

Yes, i definitely agree with you that effective communication indeed serves as the fundamental soft skill applicable in our society. It would be the best of two worlds if you are able to be successful in your career as well as in your relationships with people.
You are also right to say that effective communication covers 2 parts: written and oral (how you present), where they are both equally important.
I would agree that being able to communicate effectively is definitely an invaluable skill, particularly in the corporate world where ideas need to be brought across efficiently and time is money. However, other than being able to bring across ideas effectively, active listening also plays an integral role in being able to communicate effectively. This will allow one to understand the others better, being able to empathize with them and further enhance the communication process.
I have to agree that "Communication involves expressing our thoughts, ideas, and feelings to others". In addition i felt that expressing these at the right moment and time is also very important. It is through many situation and experience that we learn how to effective express our thoughts, ideas and feelings towards others and more importantly use it to resolve crisis.
Effective communication can indeed benefit you on many levels, ranging from individual to social communities. Being able to know when to speak and when not to will certainly make or break situations like discussing a business deal. Thus, for communication to be successful, one must be able to speak and convey their ideas in a concise manner, but must also be able to listen attentively to the speaker, so as to fully understand the situation.
Indeed, effective communication is useful in reducing wasted resources and maintaining healthy relationships. Communication also empowers people with the ability to influence such as motivating others to act positively. It takes an able communicator who can portray clearly defined goals to earn respect and be a source of motivation and inspiration.
Yes, it's ironic that a simple thing like being skilled at communicating with others seems to be of more importance than intelligence and other qualities. It makes you wonder if the schools should spend more time socialising children especially as the modern family consists of fewer children than ever before and working parents, leaving children isolated with only the computer for company.
